The electro-acoustic ensemble 4 + 1 from Athens took form in 2007 by musicians who had previously met in various bands. Having improvisation and various diverse influences in mind, this group of currently six performers started (as a quintet) to experiment on series of sonic combinations and associations, based on the either natural or processed sound of their instruments: piano, flute, shakuhachi, clarinet, acoustic/electric guitars, cello, drums/percussion and synthesizers. Working mainly on live performance, the ensemble will elaborately transform an indefinable blowing rustle to a full-on electrified free-jazz avalanche and a serene, lyrical soundscape to a huge labyrinth of mysterious (a)tonal clusters. Members of 4 + 1 are currently working on a project with greek electronic musician/performer Spyros Polychronopoulos (aka Spyweirdos) and will present their work in Synch Festival, in June 2010, in Athens. |
